    31 Dead: Andhra and Telangana Reeling from Devastating Rains, 31 Lives Lost

    Andhra and Telangana are shaking due to rain crisis. 31 people have already died and lakhs of people have been affected. In both the states, the administration has undertaken relief and rehabilitation measures.

    Hyderabad/Vijayawada, September 2: Heavy rains in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have killed 31 people, destroyed roads and railway tracks and submerged thousands of acres of agricultural crops.

    While two Telugu states were affected by the rains, 16 people died in Telangana and 15 in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.

    20 SDRF and 19 NDRF teams are engaged in relief operations. Due to the heavy rains for the last three days, the life of the people has come to a complete standstill due to power cuts for more than 24 hours in many parts of the city in Andhra and telangana.

    Scenes of a woman lamenting to Chief Minister Chandrababu Babu that people have been suffering from drinking water for two days in Ajit Singh Nagar in Vijayawada were aired on local TV news channels. Another person standing in waist-deep water begged Chandrababu Naidu, who was touring the flood-affected areas in a boat for the third time, to understand their situation.

    While people were walking through the flood waters carrying their children on their shoulders, two men were seen carrying an old woman lying on a mattress into the flood water. Some tried to save themselves in the flood with the help of a rope.

    As people were being swept away in the flood water, some were holding essential commodities in their hands and arrangements were made in the flood affected areas to take milk packets and food parcels. A flood victim complained that they have not received milk since Sunday morning and they have not received any help from the government.

    Internet and mobile telephone connectivity has disrupted life. Due to this, traffic to Hyderabad was disrupted. Transport in Vijayawada city and its surrounding areas has become chaotic. 11.3 lakh cusecs of flood water is coming and going at Prakasam barrage at 8 am on Monday.

    16 people died in Telangana

    The state government on Monday estimated that 16 people have lost their lives due to 
    rains in Telangana , and according to preliminary estimates, the damage has been Rs 5 thousand crores. Central assistance of Rs.2,000 crore has been requested immediately.

    Revanth Reddy appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood affected areas and declare the flood as a national calamity. An ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the families of those who died due to rains. As part of his visit to the rain-affected areas, the CM met with ministers and officials in Suryapet. State IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said that the complete details of casualties and others will be known after receiving the reports on the damage. A comprehensive report on flood damage will be submitted to the Centre.

    Damage to crops in 1.5 lakh acres

    Khammam: In the flood affected areas of Khammam district, the officials explained to the CM that there was severe damage as household items were washed away and some items got stuck in the gates of the houses. The people of the flood-affected areas explained their sufferings to State Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao who visited them.

    Officials said that restoration work is underway. Due to incessant rains in both the states, five trains were halted as the flood level increased in the Kazipet-Vijayawada section. He said that 7,500 passengers from these trains were brought to the nearest railway stations in government RTC buses on Sunday evening and special trains were arranged to take them to their destinations.

    A big number of lorries and cars were stuck on the Hyd-Vij National Highway near Kodad due to waterblocking. Officials have asked those going to Vijayawada to use the Narkatpally-Addanki highway as an alternative.
